I.D Your Pet

What to do if your pet is lost

First, don’t panic. Step through this checklist and be persistent:
  • Mark your pet lost on Canada’s Automated National Recovery System by PetLynx. Go to petlynx.net and click “lost a pet”. Check the Petlynx AutoMatches for your lost report frequently to follow upon potential matches.
  • Print you complimentary lost pet posters from Iams. Call your pet’s name frequently as you move through the neighbourhood and pass out copies of the poster to your neighbours know your dog is lost and can contact you. Post the complimentary Iams poster in community centres, convenience stores and pet stores.
  • Search your property and help your pet find his way home. Look in all the places where you pet could hide. Place his bedding or some unwashed laundry outside your house as a homing scent.
  • Check with veterinarians, shelters and humane societies in your area. Also check with the department of transportation (DOT) in case your pet was injured on the road.
  • Place a “lost dog” ad in the local newspaper classified section.

It’s Crucial for your pet to have identification so they can be returned if they get lost. Here are a few popular methods:

Petlynxtm: Now matter what form of identification you choose ensure it is registered in Canada’s Automated National Recovery System.

Collar Tags: A tag is the most common and visible form of I.D –it simply attaches to your dogs collar to display the dog’s name and your phone number. But your pet must wear their collar at all times, and It’s always possible that it, or the tag might become detached.

Tattoos: More permanent than a tag, a discreet I.D. number is tattooed on your pet by a veterinarian.

Microchips: Another permanent form of I.D. is a microchip. The size of a grain of rice, it’s implanted under the dog’s skin (no anesthesia or surgery is required). It contains an alpha-numeric code that can be read by animal shelters, hospitals and pounds equipped with a hand scanner. You can register this microchip at no additional cost. When a shelter finds your animal they use Canada’s Automated National Recovery System by PetLynx to get your animal back to you.

Because a tattoo or microchip could go undetected, supplement it with a collar and tag.
